Little Bee Chapters 5-8 - "I am selfish too, you know" (Cleave, 502)

So much has happened in this section!

Plot wise, not many new things happened, but this section did reveal many new details about the event on the beach, Sarah's relationship with Lawrence and Andrew's death. After the first section I was eager to continue reading and to learn about the events that were still concealed in mystery, particularity the event on the beach. After reading these next few sections what I have realized is that ignorance is bliss. The new information revealed has challenged the way I feel about the book and how I feel about Sarah and Little Bee.

I titled this blog with a quote from this section said by Little Bee while talking to Lawrence, "I am selfish too you know" (Cleave, 502). To me, this line represented a turning point in the book. The plot got even more complex with Little Bee's admission that she was there when Andrew hung himself and challenged the way I thought about Little Bee.

Little Bee has definitely become even more complex and thought provoking in this second section of the book. I am still very much enjoying looks and am anxious to see what further secrets will be revealed in the last section of Little Bee. Most of all I wonder what will happen to Sarah and Little Bee. Is there relationship one that can be sustained? Will Little Bee face deportation and a future as tragic as her past?

What do you guys think? Feel free to comment below!

  1. The first section of this chapter was extremely hard breaking because not only do you learn the awful way Little Bee's sister died, but you learn that she has been dead this whole time and it was something Little Bee was dealing with. I can see now why Little Bee is so frightened by the men, after what they did to her sister.. who wouldn't be? I think these chapters really formed Little Bee and her story, at first she was a mystery because we barley knew anything about her, but after we learned what happened to her sister, and what really happened the day Andrew died I think I was able to better understand Little Bee and what she is dealing with. Also I hate Lawrence. Not only did they have a whole chapter on Sarah's gross affair with him (I'm only saying gross because he sucks) but he threatened Little Bee after she told him the truth. I hope he somehow disappears in the last few chapters.

    1. Lawrence does suck! And he seems to know it to from the self deprecating way he talks. Lawrence is completely selfish. He doesn't care about what Little Bee has been through, he only cares that she leaves so he can have Sarah for himself. He doesn't care about his wife when he cheats on her with Sarah and blatantly lies about it. He doesn't even care about Sarah, although he claims to, because he shows up at her house a few days after her husbands death and doesn't understand why she gets about them sleeping in her and her husbands bed. Unfortunately, Lawrence did not disappear in the last few chapters, but I wish he would have!

  2. I thought of Little Bee's claim of being 'selfish' as unexpected as well. In fact, I took it the same way Lawrence took it when he thought it absurd and he doubted her saying, "Selfish! You? Took the last biscuit out of the tin, did you? Left the top off Sarah's toothpaste?". In reality she basically watched Andrew die. I guess it comes to show that refugees/orphans like her aren't always as spotlessly innocent as we naturally deem them to be. Then again when she tells the details of Andrew's suicide she did try to prevent it so personally, I wouldn't even label her as selfish, I find her so innocent, her inability to carry his weight is her idea of 'selfish'. Guilty or not, I find her act of staying to help Sarah and Charlie as a sign of her character's loyalty which again makes one admire her regardless of her 'dirty' secret.

    1. Little Bee's confession of being selfish really shocked me! Her admission of what really happened during Andrew's death really complicated the story and made me think about it differently. I understand how Little Bee feels guilt, after experiencing two suicides and multiple other deaths at such a young age. I don't think she was to blame for Andrew's suicide because he was depressed for so long and was only getting worse. Another thing that surprised me was how easily Sarah accepted and forgave Little Bee's admission when she finally told her about this. I think it goes to show how strong of a connection Sarah and Little Bee had.
